Old Friends

When you ripped me out of sleep last night my first thought was "oh great".

It's been a while now. Maybe even a year. Just to the point that I was hoping you'd never turn up again.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm happy you're back. Those nights in misery, too many days being able to think of nothing else but the pain are not something i'm keen to repeat.

I learned how to get you to go last time, and I'm going to do it again.

Remember

The hysterical rhetoric of war is filling my ears. Like white noise - it's drowning out the aged voice of the man on the corner.

The streets are full of strangers and I wonder if today is the day I die.

My grandmother's grief for the loss of her soul mate stirs something within.

The still voice after the tempest. Warning. Reminding.

In that moment of quiet at 11am I finally make out the words:

"Lest we forget."
